Feeding the Baby

The parents drop food in front of the baby, rather than into their mouth. Then the baby picks it up as if it caught it himself =)
The Grin

Ever since I've become interested in birds I've been dying to see puffins. The Oregon Aquarium in Newport has an aviary with some, and I keep forgetting to go when the birds are in their breeding plumage. Well, thanks to my Flickr pal for reminding me it was that time of year, so I dropped everything and headed out on Sunday. I kept trying to get their straight-on look 'cuz they look like a Carnivale mask with a grin, but I could never get just that exact shot. This was as close as I got.

Merganser, Common (Female)

This crazy duck was flying circles around our neighborhood and finally lighted on the neighbor's chimney for about 15 minutes, looking around intently. She even went down inside for a second or two, which scared me half to death! There's one very small duck pond in the neighborhood, but I don't know if she knew that.
Fighting for the Girl...

I hope she's worth it! There was a whole pile of feathers in the pond when these guys finally gave up.

Angels Who Lift Our Feet

“Friends are angels who lift our feet when our own wings have trouble remembering how to fly.”

We went to Sauvie's Island in Portland, Oregon this weekend. It's such a thrill to watch a HUGE flock of snow geese lift off of one accord -- all loudly vocalizing and flying chaotically in a huge burst of energy -- whenever a hawk or eagle flies over!
