synapped  > Other > The Latest Thing Pre-2012
My "Latest Thing" galleries are a nearly daily upload of whatever catches my eye at the moment, so it's a hodgepodge of images. They are then organized -- along with occasionally some images that don't make it into The Latest Thing -- into categories you can find by clicking in the upper left on "synapped."

synapped > Two-fer

Check it out large to see the two-fer! Another hummer from the CASEE botanical gardens in Brush Prairie, WA. There are a whole host of them living there, zooming all around divebombing each other, chasing each other around, buzzing by your head as you sit there. They're so fun to watch!

synapped > Outta My Way!

Did you locals know there are WHITE PELICANS on the Columbia River this year? I've seen them several times between Biggs and Portland, and my girlfriend has seen them near Tri-Cities and in Walla Walla, WA! For those of you who are not local, we only get the brown pelicans in our area and at the Pacific coast. I've been dying to get white pelicans. Must get out there again to get some closeups, but it's scary 'cuz there wasn't a good wide spot on the freeway where they were hanging out.

Thank you all for the wonderful comments on my hummingbird shot. I'm overwhelmed!
I've hardly posted any roses from the Portland Rose Gardens this year. Let's get started!

synapped > The First Sip Is Joy

There's a quote about the Oriental passion for tea: the first sip is joy, the second is gladness, the third is serenity, the fourth is madness, the fifth is ecstasy.

I see photos like this posted online all the time, and I had no idea what is involved in the shot. Let me share with you what it took for me to finally get a hummingbird shot I LOVE.

First, since I don't like to garden I studied what flowers the hummers like and then found some of those flowers. Then because the little buggers fly so fast and are so territorial they chase each other all around the place, so 90% of the times you see them you couldn't possibly get a shot. I went to this botanical garden 4 times and sat there for 3 hours each time before getting this shot.

Then when the bird finally comes to your flower of choice they flit around very fast, of course, so it's nearly impossible to get focused on them. When you actually get lucky enough to get focused, one out of every burst of 10 shots might be actually sharp. Then to find one where the bird is in a good position and/or not behind a stem or leaf cuts those shots down dramatically, and to find one in the group that's a good composition where the flowers are still pretty culls them out even more.

I took 193 hummer shots in 6 hours at the garden in the last 2 days. I deleted 95 right off. Of those, 29 were actually decent shots. Of those, I considered 7 to be good. Of those, there were 3 I would actually frame and put on my wall!

If you've taken the time to read this far you can see it's really MY sip of success that is full of joy today!!

To see his expression view it in Large size! The roadside at the wildlife refuge was full of these caterpillars last week. Anyone know what kind of creature they'll become? UPDATE: Thank you, Chika! It looks like it's the Cinnabar Moth.

I love cedar waxwings and found an Oregon grape bush where they're hanging out. I had no idea this one was doing anything unusual till I found this in my uploads. I still don't know what it was doing!
